PsychoActive Substances: excerpts from a recent email received from an ER physician

On Getting Older

Psychoactive Substances
. . . all this talk about the 120 billion punitive damages against tobacco companies makes me think of the next target -- alcohol sellers. Alcohol is unlike tobacco in one respect -- moderate usage (1 to 2 drinks per day) is not dangerous and may be healthy. However, alcohol has many more pernicious effects on society than tobacco, which aside from secondhand smoke mainly affects adults that choose to smoke. Alcohol is involved in most suicides, homicides, and assaults. It is related to child abuse and spousal abuse. About half of the 45,000 traffic deaths each year are related to alcohol. The economy suffers from missed work and unemployment. Finally, there are the health costs of liver disease and cancers caused by alcohol.

Eventually, the same lawyers -- federal, state, and private class action attorneys -- will go after the big alcohol sellers like A-Busch, Miller Brewing. I'm not talking about the boutique wineries. I think you could take a moral and the fiscal high ground without alienating many voters in health conscious Orange County. By the way, I am a social drinker myself. I'm also an ER physician that is sick and tired of seeing the ER filled up with car accident victims, stabbing victims, beaten women, and abused children -- all caused by alcohol abuse. I think the sellers of these products need to be assessed more of the social cost. Current taxes are not covering the bills and aren't even allocated to solve the problem or ameliorate its effects.

Best Regards,

Mike
