This special election for 48th Congressional District is not really about individual candidates or political parties. This election is more an opportunity for the people of Orange County to voice directly their displeasure with George Bush’s “bring ‘em on” foreign policy and particularly his blunder in attacking Iraq based on false intelligence reports and his personal vendettas.

The theme of my campaign can be summed up in three words:
“Stop the bleeding.”

We are currently spending $7 billion dollars a month in Iraq. On average the lives of 60 American soldiers and Marines are sacrificed, and some 500 are wounded every month. Tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis have also been killed. It’s time to bring our troops home.

Until we stop the bleeding in Iraq we cannot begin to address the cancers here at home. The economy is falling apart – witness the volatile oil prices, the housing bubble, the huge twin federal budget and trade deficits created by the Bush administration, and the crumbling pension funds and social security. After the bombings in London, we all know that our homeland is really not more secure. Perhaps worst are the drug wars going on in our streets and the violence that often spills over into our schools. Indeed, our public education system is losing ground fast to others around the world.

I have just three words for those that share my views on Iraq and the President’s bellicose foreign policy: “Just show up!” This special mid-term election is the voters’ best opportunity to let George Bush know that they’re angry about his poor leadership and his disastrous decisions that have killed so many and cost so much. A strong voter turnout on October 4th will begin to change things.
